Y. 12 Wildcat Gridster$ Anticipate Next Season After the past grid season, which saw much progress in the Wildcats pigskin prestige, the gridsters of Y High look forward with much anticipation to another great season of their favorite sport. Out of the 27 lettermen of the 1948 season, 12 of them will return to spark the Wildcats o what should be their best grid season. This past years team featured one of the strongest backfields in Wildcat history. The team of Christensen, Christiansen, and Baliif, with Crosby or Maloney filling in to add the final punch, was hard to beat. However the point which failed the "Cats at certain times was a relatively inexperienced line, but in view of the fact that most of these boys will be back next year, this point is really in our favor for the coming grid season. Although our backfield prospects for the 49 season look considerably weaker than this year, the prospect is cheered up by hopes for one of the strongest lines Y high has yet boasted. In spite of the fact that we lose such line veterans as Fred Johnson, Grant Brockbank, Don McIntosh, Paul Clark, Jimmy Jones, Jo Dell Benson, June Hanson, DeVere Brough, and Phil Morgan, the picture of returning lettermen on the line is bright. Frank Eccles will be an k apt contender for the bolDick White with big position stering the line from his left guard position Cliff Corless should look good at left tackle and lanky Tom Karren will use his alien ferocity at left end. On the right side of the line Dallin Oaks will be fighting to retain his position at right tackle. The holes at right guard and right end shouldnt cause any headaches with the abundance of last years lettermen such as Ron Dyches, Don Gilcrist, Owen Marron, Norm Kimball, and such sophomores of this year as Ab Christensen, Jimmy Judd and Ted Harris to push the lettermen hard for their positions. The backfield picture is slightly less bright, but Eddie Maloney seems quite vicious about his berth at Right half and Val Springfellow will be a partner, with Kent Lloyd calling signals. Boyd Dowdell and Glen Grosjean complete the backfield picture. Along with these immediate prospects, it should be remembered that 4 of last years regulars or semito "Y regulars were High that fall. So look and hope for still more material for the gridiron, come next fall, and look with Coaches Owen Dixon and Rex Olson for a great football season! snap-bac- hard-hittin- g new-come- Last Will rs Y High now has another Championship team as the Wildcats walked away with the crown after defeating Spanish Fork 5 in a fast game on the Forkers field. This is the first year in the "Y Highs history that a baseball team has ever accomplished this feat. The Wildcats remained undefeated after their first loss to Car- The Region bon. Norm Christiansen hit a homer in the first with a double in the third to bat in four runs, followed by El Roy Nelson tripping in the Wildcats big inning. The Baseball Nine should be complemented for their fine play and many hours they have practiced to make this championship possible. Coach Rex Olsen has really shown that he is a capable coach with the State Basketball championship and also the Region Baseball Crown. Although Harold Christensen, Jae Baliif, Norm Christiansen, Don McIntosh, Kent Broadhead, Paul Salis, bury, and Gene Tuttle, the boys who have twice brought the crown to the Campus school, are graduating, they leave behind them a quartet of bright stars to bolster next years team. Tom Karren, All State selection, will be a recognized defensive and offensive threat. Teamed up with sharpshooting Mic Eggertson, versatile Stan Collins, and unpredictable Kent Lloyd, our 4 returning letter-me- n will make a good team nucleus. To complete this team we turn to last years B team and find a few talented boys who will add to the Y highs hoop hopes. Morris Jack-ma- n has shown himself to be a real contender for starting position with his sensational pivot activities, while Eddie Maloneys "rough and ready tactics will be dangerous to offenders. Tall men Dave Young, Dallin Oaks, and Ab Christensen will be hotly contesting for a position on that enviable 10 man squad, and Jim Dunford, Cliff Corless and other members of this past years junior team are also to be reckoned with. Look for more good years, Wildcats! State Class "B established; only group and two lucky clads thin working lettermen. In the two meets they entered during the past season, competition was very keen with no less than 8 schools participating and seldom fewer than 20 to 30 contestants in each hotly contested event. Against this competition the Cats were able to pull down 2 4th places, one in the "Invitational and one in the Region HI meet. Harold Christensen tallied in the broadjump with a jump of 19 6 and Dallin Oaks also gained his letter with a pitch of 118 5 with the discus. Along with these tracksters were Don McIntosh, Dee Chamberlain, Kent Kirby, Fred Johnson, Ted Nielsen, Dick White, Jim Dunford and Mcl Davidson. All of these boys will be back to strenghten next years team except Chris, Don and Fred. This was the Wildcats first year of track, and considering the stiff competition, they have done quite well, but best of all they have established a track team which should be a bright star in Region III in years to come. The Wildcat nine met a powerful Cyprus club at Magna, Thursday and lost their chance of winning the State Championship by a 14-- 6 score. The cats jumped to an early lead but were soon overcome by the opponents as they muffed ball after ball in the field. Jackman started on the mound but was relieved in the later innings by Christensen who pitched till the end of the game. The score would have been much closer if the team would have played better ball instead of the careless type that was played. Karren and Christiansen each connected for a homer and Salisbury hit a stinging tripple. This was the last baseball game of the season but the team won the region play to climax a successful season. SENIORS CARRY OUT ANNUAL SLUFF DAY Yesterday, May 19, the seniors reigned supreme when they held their annual Senior Sluff Day. They started out bright and early with a breakfast at the Silver Star and then headed for Saratoga for swimming and games. In the afternoon they went up the canyon for their dinner and climaxed the day with a dance held in the canyon.
