On May 13, 2008 our mother, Avis Montgomery grandmother, greatgrandmother, greatgreat-grandmother and friend returned to the arms of her Heavenly Father. Avis recently celebrated her 90th birthday with many family members and friends paying homage. Avis Gray Porter Montgomery was born January 22, 1918 in Cornell Township, North Dakota to Oliver and Freda Swart Gray, the third of four children. Later, while the family was living in Valley City, North Dakota, they were visited by missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They accepted the teachings of the church and were all baptized. When Avis was 9 years old, the family moved to Ogden, Utah. Oliver and Freda renewed their marriage vows in the Salt Lake City Temple. Avis spent many fun-filled days as a youth in Ogden, sharing many memories of that time with her children, often expressing her love for the Utah Mountains. She attended Ogden City schools. Shortly after graduation, she married Maurice C. Porter and they were blessed with a son and daughter. They were later divorced, and Avis married Rick Montgomery, being blessed with one son. They were later divorced. Avis raised her children by owning and operating the Montgomery Child Day Care Center. She loved and cared for each and every child for 22 years. She was active in the Ogden 24th ward, holding several positions, her favorite being Coordinator of the Junior Sunday School, which she held for many years. She attended Stevens Henager Business College and was named Valedictorian. Upon graduation, she moved to Los Angeles and was employed at the Firestone Plant as a secretary. When the plant moved to Akron, Ohio, Avis became secretary at TRW. She was living in Redondo Beach and loved the ocean and her many walks on the beach. On Saturdays she would drive to Santa Monica before daylight to attend the Santa Monica Temple sessions. After eight years, she transferred with TRW back to Ogden at Hill Air Force Base, and to the mountains she loved, becoming a secretary in the space program. She retired at age 66. Her family was first and foremost in her mind and heart, and she was happiest during family get-togethers. She loved all animals and her cats held a special place in her heart. She loved working in her beautiful flower garden and during her free time loved to golf, winning many tournaments in Utah, Idaho, and California. She was very artistic; loving music and writing poetry. Part of a tribute to her children that she wrote reads: Help me to teach them take hold of thy hand . . . . To eagerly listen for thy command . . . . More like the Master to live and to grow . . . . Only good seeds in this life to sow . . . . To honor thy name in all that we do . . . . Living for Jesus a life that is true. She has been a resident at Manor Care in South Ogden for the last year and often expressed her appreciation for the kindness and care given her. The family would like to also express appreciation to Ina and Annette at Access Hospice for their support. She is survived by a daughter Sharon (Dick) Slaughter of Eden; a son Robert Porter (Fawn Bennett) of Ogden; a son Russell (Janis) Montgomery of North Ogden; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Oliver and Freda Gray; two brothers, Leslie Gray and Dale Gray; and one sister Grace Gray Hussey. Graveside services were held May 16, 2008 at 11:30 a.m. at the Ogden City Cemetery.
