Olene Smith named in the article is former Utah Governor Olene Walker who is a graduate of Weber High School. Thirty-four students from Weber High Speech I class will participate in the Weber college Speech contest to be held March 5 and 6, 1948. Idaho and Wyoming high schools, along with Utah schools, have a special invitation to this tournament as a training ground for public speaking. There will be three events; debating, oratory, and extemporaneous speakin The debates have been divided into roups: Class A and Class B including both a men’s division and a women’s division. The teams entered in Class A are: Seth Blair and Arvin Shreeve; Patsy Pollard and Gerrie Reese; Gwenda Cragun and Lorraine Storey; Monte Da Bell and Dee Jacobs; Luan Ferrin and Curtis Gardner; Bob Hatch and Glen Rudd; Boyd Parke and Edward Burrows; and Vira Beth Robson and Olene Smith In class B are Richard Carter and Burk Spencer; Paul Favero and Melvin Green; and Wayne Graham and Darrell Renstrom. The debate question is: Resolve: That the Federal Government Should Require Arbitration of Labor Disputes in all Basic American Industries. A trophy will be awarded to the winner of each division. Those entering oratory are: Kent Fuller, Ivan Heslop, Le Roy Hooper, Nola Johnston, Arva Jean Peterson, Gerrie Reese, Patsy Pollard, Norma Thurston, and Arvin Shreeve. The orations may be on any subject. Extemporaneous speakers are Duane Ericson, Curtis Gardner, Ivan He slop, Bob Hatch, Olene Smith, and Tea Historical Searle. The extemporaneous speeches will be on “Taxation in Utah,” “The United Nations,” current news magazine articles and newspapers. A latter regional contest will also feature the panel discussion, “A world federation.” Awards will be issued for winners in each event. Photo Utah Genealogical Society (UGA) Announces Activities We look forward to having you join us on Saturday, May 20 at 10:00 a.m. at the Ogden Regional Family History Center located at 539 24th Street in Ogden for their regional meeting. Guest speaker Mary Abbott Johnson will present “A Look to the Future While Discovering the Past.” Mary is the President of the International Society Daughters of Utah Pioneers. Friends and family are welcome. As always, the Ogden Regional Family History Center will be open and available to the public offering the use of their computers and equipment. After the presentation, volunteers will be on hand to assist you with your own Family History research after the presentation. Annual Ogden City Cemetery Tour UGA’s annual Ogden City Cemetery Tour will be held this year Saturday, June 10; and Monday, June 12 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Joanne Hanson will be the hostess for this event.
