The Utah Direct Legislation leasue was launched Saturday at a meeting of a number of believers in direct legislation held during the lunch hour at the Young Women's Christian association clubrooms In the Continental bank building. Dr. Grace Stratton-Airey was named chairman chair-man and P. B. Cadie secretary of the temporary organization. Secretary Cadie was instructed, to communicate com-municate with the National Idrect Legislation Legis-lation league, and to take such steps as may be necessary to affiliate the Utah bod'v with the national organization. Another An-other meeting will be called by the chairman, chair-man, after the national organization is heard from, for the purpose of effecting a permanent organization in I'tah. While no date for the meeting has been definitely defi-nitely fixed, it probably will be held during dur-ing state fair week in October. Tentative plans as outlined at yesterday's yester-day's meeting- include a aeries of le'dures by national authorities on direct legislation. legisla-tion. What other action may be taken by the league in connection with the coming com-ing campaign will depend entirely upon instructions received from the national league. Throughout the nation T'tnh has long been classed among the states favoring direct legislation. The state constitution constitu-tion provides for the initiative and referendum, refer-endum, but the legislature has not yet enacted a law making the provision opet-a opet-a tive. |
