I-15 was closed off and on Saturday and Sunday due to the huge Milford Flat wild fire. The fire has become the largest wildfire in Utah State history, with over 300,000 acres burned at this point. As of Tuesday, the fire was still raging out of control in many places. Both teams advanced past teams from Manti, Ephraim and Moroni to square off in the championship game. Gunnison team 1, coached by Paul Peterson was victorious over team 2, coached by Boyd Allred. Mayfield’s 24th of July Pioneer Day celebration will begin at 10 am with a good old hometown parade. The Grand Marshall’s are Charles and Ingrid Whitlock. Parade Chairwoman, Mary Anne Bjerregaard, would like to encourage businesses, organizations, neighborhoods and families to participate in the parade. Entries for the parade meet at 1st North and 2nd West between 8 and 10 am. Any questions concerning the parade call 528-3255. The celebration will continue after the parade at the Mayfield City Park. Activities at the park include: carnival games, a silent auction, children’s train ride, pole climb, volleyball tournament, races, and of course the greased pig chase! The auction will be at 12:30. For this years’ entertainment, Mayfield’s bringing back-- by popular demand, “In Cahoots.” They will begin per- forming at 11 am and will continue until 12:30. Taco salads, hamburgers, and hot dogs will be served along with a cold drink. Snow cones will also be sold at the park. Don’t forget the Wild River Duck Race! Ducks will dive into the river at 2 pm and the owner of the winning duck will receive a shinny new red 4x4 2007 Kawasaki Mule sponsored by Mason Kawasaki of Aurora. There will also be a second place prize sponsored by Rasmussen Ace hardware and a third place prize sponsored by Gunnison Implement Company. Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased at Christiansen’s Merc during business hours and Gunnison Market on Friday and Saturday afternoons each weekend until the 24th. Tickets may also be purchased at the parade and at the park until 2 pm on the 24th. Bill Jensen is the Lion’s Club 24th of July Celebration Chairman and he would like to invite everyone out to enjoy the day’s festivities. Mark Henline/Gunnison Valley Gazette GVHS CLASS OF 1972- Members of the GVHS Class of 1972 celebrated their 35 year reunion at the Gunnison Valley Middle School on Friday, July 6. There were 45 in attendance which included 26 class members. Alumni and their spouses enjoyed a Dutch oven dinner, fun, visiting and reminiscing. This year’s reunion was organized by Mary (Bartholomew) Dove of North Ogden, Evlynn Peterson of Mayfield, Rex Oliver of Santa Clara, Charles Inouye of Lexington, MA, Blaine Nielson of Axtell, and Neal Coates of Aurora. A special thanks to Alan Peterson for the use of the middle school and the setting up of the facilities.
