Show The Ogden Valley news Page Volume XIV Issue XX August 1, 2007 NACD Hosts Successful Conference in Ogden Valley The National Association for Child Development (NACD), an international organization based in Ogden, hosted its first annual conference at various locations throughout the Valley. A total of 40 families attended the conference. Families came from all over the country from states such as Arizona, Colorado, North Carolina, Missouri, and even as far away as Alaska. Some of the NACD conference participants had never been to Utah before. The NACD conference featured many workshops and fun activities for the families while they were visiting the area. It was a wonderful opportunity for the children and families to connect with each other and not have to explain why their child was “different.” About 1,000 families worldwide are current NACD members. The organization began in 1979 in California before moving to Huntsville in 1990, then to Ogden about eight years ago, according to NACD administrators. The goal of NACD is to enhance neurological and brain function of children so they can achieve their innate potential. NACD teaches parents’ activities and exercises they can use to help their children who face challenges including down syndrome, autism, and cerebral palsy. Once the child is evaluated, NACD developmentalists write a program specific to the child and their unique needs. The family then implements the program while keeping in close contact with NACD staff. Children are able to greatly improve their function and lead much more productive lives according to NACD administrators. NACD administrators say they plan to make the conference an annual event. “Ogden Valley is such a beautiful place with something for everyone” said Alison Wimmer, a developmentalist with NACD who lives in Eden. “The families were able to enjoy many of the things the Valley has to offer thanks to the generous donations of the many great businesses in the area, including Harley and Bucks, Dottie Beck’s, Alpine Pizza, Iverson Dental, Zion’s Bank, Eats of Eden, Valley Market, Wolf Creek, Moose Hollow and the Ogden Valley Newspaper. Thanks for helping make the event such a huge success!” For more information on NACD, visit to <www.nacd.org> Looking for Real Men Gentlemen start your ovens!
