Jones, ASSUSC academic vice president, said was "illegal." "It reads in the Constitution that the senate alone can allocate senate funds. ..It was wrong and was upset about it," Jones explained. The senate agreed to "petition the executive council for the return of the money, and will reallocate it if necessary." Later in the week, Jones said the problem was caused from a "lack of communication," and Monica Moe, ASSUSC president, thought that the senate would pay for the trips, since it was done that way in the past. The money went toward the UIA convention, a trip to the capital and the Board of Regents meeting. Jones said that earlier in the year, Moe had asked him to set aside the funds for travel. When the time came, Jones said Moe went through the appropriate channels to requisition the money, but forgot to tell him. The BSU (Black Student Union) bill was returned to the senate after Moe's veto. Passed the week before by the senate, the bill would have alloted $900 for speaker fees for Black Awareness Week and $200 for club operations. Jones said Moe "felt better about the bill after we talked. She is reconsidering her veto." The senate will conduct an investigation to find out how much money the Multicultural Center has been receiving from the BSU and the other clubs it sponsors. Michael Bahr, Flelen Tucker and Julie Hutchings will conduct the investigation which will be concluded by Jan. 15. There will be a position open in the senate for the School of Science in January, when Stacey Stewart goes on a mission to the Philippines for the LDS Church. Applications for the position are now being accepted. The executive council, at its Tuesday meeting, was told that the Utah Student Association is conducting a food drive. "This is completely separate from the school's food bank," Moe pointed out. She told the council that the goal in Cedar City is to collect 3,000 units (packages or cans) of food by Dec. 10. The competition is now open to community members, faculty, staff members and students. A $150 prize will be awarded to the winning entry, according to Stacy Buchanan, ASSUSC administrative vice president. The winning song was to be announced at a dance Saturday night, but only two students entered songs for preliminary judging Tuesday. "Both entries were very good. We appreciate the hard work and enthusiasm that was put in, and we encourage them to resubmit their entries, but we need more entries," said Buchanan, who is supervising the contest. Buchanan said the song should be catchy, easy to remember and that the contestant should write original words, but the melody can be original or a familiar tune.
