sunday open ho house use will be held at his home 47 no main from 3 to 7 p in he has led an eventful life and one of service to the mormon church his life s history is written briefly below and is submitted at this time for his friends relatives and descendants to read ath 1864 in lake was view tooele thoele county utah he was a native son and one of a family of seventeen children whose parents were archi bald C and ellen gillespie shields robert was the seventh child five families were called by brigham young to settle lake view in 1860 they were archibald C shields robert C shields john smith adam smith and moses martin descendants of these saints have become the leading citizens of tooele thoele county and the surround mg ing country on arriving in tooele thoele county their first obligation was the build ing of houses to shelter their fam alies mr shields first home was a loge log cabin abin with a dirt roof as well as a dirt floor the necessities of life were scarce at the age of five years he remembers receiving his first hajt ho and pair of shoes his education during childhood was limited as there were no grade schools at that time with advance ing years his desire for knowledge increased being of a religious turn of mind he received much of his education in m the organizations of the church a man of special mis callings in the brigham young academy he took courses of special training in M I 1 A work today at the age of 84 years he is on of the best script in tooele thoele stake with a knowledge of church procedure that is seldom equaled anywhere he is an ain influx estial speaker and ardent defender of his faith baptized in 1877 his activities in the church have been continuous through his life at the age of thirteen he was bap sized on july 1st 1877 by walter adamson and confirmed by phillip Phil hp delamare DeI aMare july 2nd 1877 ordained a seventy june 1888 by frank lin D richards and set apart for fot a mission to the southern states june 1888 by F D richards labored in west virginia of the maryland conference for two years under wm win spry who was dent of the mission returning home tune june 1890 the first progressive program for the mutual improvement assoria lion tion was given at the brigham young academy in 1892 this con aisted of a special treatise of five leading books of the church mr shields was called to take this ourse course it proved to be a valuable preparation for him in the years to come in november 1892 he and harry haynes were called on a three months mission to cache and malad stakes to conduct classes in mutual improvement procedure they returned home in the spring of 1893 to witness the dedication of the salt lake temple server in auxiliaries on returning to lake view ward he became active in the auxiliary organizations first as president of i MIA for three years then he I 1 ed as first assistant in the sunday school to supt bupt wallace sagers for twenty years 1896 to 1917 and was superintendent of the sunday school chool for three years 1917 to 1920 upon moving to tooele thoele he became a worker in tooele thoele south and north wards as sunday school teacher president C alvin orme ordain ed him a high priest feb 20 1916 mr shields was called to labor as missionary in the tooele thoele wards As a ward teacher he has been ac tive for thirty years he has been president of the high priest quor um urn in the tooele thoele north ward since 1933 one of the outstanding labors has been the work done in the temples for the redemption of the dead besides farming the shields fam ily engaged in the manufacture of lime and brick mr shields and his father built a six room house doing all the masonry work and carpentry he also helped construct the international smelter and worked there for thirty years he worked at mining in bingham and in dry canyon hauling ore from the honerine mine in stockton to bauer which at that time was a terminal of a narrow gauge rail road that ran from salt lake he moved to tooele thoele in 1921 and leased a rooming house on north main street in 1927 he sold his home in lake view and bought one at north main in tooele thoele he still owns this home has many friends brother shields has possessed the rare quality of being able to make friends and keep them among young and old he has always been a favorite for h s congenial dis position some of his close assoni ates in boyhood were joe shields ohn john martin george G smith james ames G smith george M smith robert whitehouse james steele dave and walter adamso adamson n adam smith and many others in the mis sion field his close friends were william spry charles wood of huntsville and joshua humer of cache valley tn tooele thoele stake he had a wide association with the early leaders heber J grant francis M lyman hugh S gowans charles anderson george P F richards charles R me bride C alvin orme A J land I 1 and alfred L hanks one of his favorites scriptures but seek ye first the kingdom of god and his righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you has surely been exemplified in his life robert G shields and eliza otil la hansen were married in the salt 1 lake ake temple august 25 1897 to this union were born seven girls two have died and all the others fare are married and as follows mrs thelma dymock tooele thoele city utah mrs leona christensen los ange les calif mrs thressa bell too ele utah mrs myrtle bracken and mrs katie peterson of tooele thoele city brother and sister shields were a model couple worthy the imitation of those desiring to establish a sue suc and happy home mrs shields passed away in 19 43 leaving more than a score of grandchildren and great grand children served As constable brother shields labors in kempor al affairs have covered a wide range of activities A As a boy oy he e lived at home with his father and a large family farming was their ch ef occupation he worked in the mountains getting out logs from wh ch many houses were built burning charcoal and lime and many other occupations were fam aliar to the boys of the shields I 1 family robert has held responsible positions among his people at one time he was precinct constable also served as road supervisor and school trustee he was always a trustworthy and respected citizen a lover of good government and an ardent supporter of the cons titu tion of his country at one time he was a teacher of the religion class along with sister annie sheets the classes were held every thursday at 2 p m and although his farm was two miles away he found time to get on a horse and ride to the school house for this worthy service at the close of the meeting he return ed to his farm to finish the plowing upon moving to tooele thoele the religion classes were continued in the combined north and south wards while he lived in the tooele thoele north ward he was appointed group leader and secretary of the high priests quorum a position he stil still holds active as high priest later he moved to the tooele thoele 1st ward and acted in many cap i cities in quorum assisting bishop harris he was appointed secretary of the high priests under pres peter M clegg he ile visited 34 high nests priests of the first ward to collect historical facts and membership dues for the year 1946 the first part of this history was written when he was 72 years olal old that was 12 years ago at the pres ent time he is 84 years old an and d his posterity has increased as also his good works he and his good wife had 7 girls 6 son in laws 3 granddaughter in laws one great grandson he has paid tithing for sixty years and has lived the word of wisdom pretty close broth er shields is now 84 and in good health for which he is thankful to the lord mrs alien allen jr
