Show A prehistoric mim john of lelii tells of a cedar valley find from mr john woodhouse of lelii we learn of the discovery at twelve milo pass in cedar valley of a prehistoric mine which has already attracted considerable attention from interested not only in the present but the past history of the territory when this mine was worked and the fate of the original owners will perhaps forever remain a mystery although subsequent Bub sequent developments may throw some light upon what must always remain a most interesting sub jest during the past few months james powell william jackson and others have been prospecting in cedar valley and while rut one day their attention was attracted to what appeared to be an old dump further investigation confirmed the belief although strong doubts at first existed because of the that large cedar trees were growing on it closer examination revealed c tunnel about feet but which had been apparently larger originally as portions of the aides gave evid of having bulged in and tha floor waa illicitly covered with rubbish and refuse preferring to commence afresh rather than use the ill smelling bole the commenced work along the side of it they have already followed the tunnel for about fifty feet and there are no more indications of the end now than when work was first commenced another discovery was made which confirms the belief that the such it may be called was worked many years ago one oi the party cut down a large dry cedar tree for fuel and when preparing it for use he discovered a large iron spike near the centre of the tree and covered by about ten inches of wood the spike was about seven inches long aud three fourths of an inch in diameter the outer end was somewhat corroded but the remainder was not harmed and a test show edit to bo of a fine and tough quality of iron from the position m which it was found tho heights from the ground and its proximity to the old tunnel one would naturally infer that it had been driven into the tree for tho purpose of hanging cooking uton sils or other articles upon it and thero seems to be no reason to doubt but that tha growth of the tree finally covered the spike the tree when cut down however had been dead for an indefinite length of time those inclined to enigmas may probably calculate how many years it is since some old miner haug his coffee on the spike that was found buried almost in the heart of the tree the surrounding rocks bear evidence of considerable prospecting work bein done this find is in the same neighborhood as the mine discovered by lehi parties a couple of years since and sold to eiter co for 1000 the success of that company is what attracted tho discoverers of the old mine to that vicinity further developments will bo eagerly prosecuted and it may be that some interesting if not intrinsically valuable discoveries will be made |
