Show Page 14 The Ogden Valley news Volume XV Issue IX April 15, 2008 Sixth Graders Participate in Outing High Altitude Kids Now Enrolling Students for Pre-kindergarten and Pre-school Programs Hosted by Ogden Valley Pathways By Shanna Francis Ogden Valley News Ogden Valley Pathways is gearing up for their annual student hike and essay contest. Each year, Valley Elementary sixth graders participate in a hike hosted by Pathways. The students learn about the environment and the value of non-motorized pathways, and stop along the route to identify plants and other wildlife features, and collect litter and debris. This year, students will hike the Pineview West Trail to Windsurfer Beach Parking lot on May 12, 14, and 16. Students will then be asked to write and submit to Ogden Valley Pathways an essay on an aspect of the benefits of pathways in the community. This year’s theme is “What I can do to preserve and care for pathways trails in Ogden Valley.” Ten winning essays will be selected with student, writers receiving $25 cash awards and a certificate at a formal awards ceremony. The OGDEN VALLEY NEWS will also print some of the winning student essays. Applications can be obtained through the newspaper or at each school. High Altitude Kids is excited to announce that it is opening enrollment for its new preschool program that will start in the fall of 2008. Pat Fuller, who currently teaches and runs the private kindergarten program that recently moved from the Old Fire House to High Altitude Kids, will be teaching the pre-kindergarten program for 4 and 5 year olds this fall. The pre-kindergarten program will be offered three days a week (M/W/F) from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Miss Pat will focus on reading, writing, and math with special emphasis given to music and art. She is a gifted instructor with over 30 years of Valley Boys Compete in Gymnastics Championships— Jake Lewis takes third place On Friday, March 28, Jake Lewis of Eden and Carson Gunderson of Huntsville competed in the Utah State Boys’ Gymnastics Championships in St. George, Utah. The boys are members of the Elite Gymnastics Boys’ Level 6 Cash awards of $25.00 to be awarded to ten students, one from each grade level if there are entrants at each level or ten best essays overall. Winning essays will be published in the Ogden Valley News or the Ogden Standard Examiner. Essays will become the property of Ogden Valley Pathways and will not be returned. Completed entry form and essay must be turned in to Mrs. Evans at Valley Elementary by May 9, 2008. Essays without signatures on this contest form will be disqualified. Late essays are disqualified. Essays must be neatly hand printed or computer printed in size 12 font. Essays should contain no less than 100 words. 200 words maximum. Essays should reflect the following ideas. 1. Preservation and care for the network of non-motorized public pathways that maintain, enhance, and preserve the natural beauty of Ogden Valley. 2. The value of pathways of this nature in Ogden Valley. 3. Things that the essay writer can do and will do to preserve and protect the trails. High Altitude Fitness is excited to offer this new program. Carol Dellinger, owner and teacher at High Altitude Fitness, will be teaching a pre-school class for 3 year olds. Carol received her teaching certificate in South Africa where she taught 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade. The pre-school program will run on Tuesdays and Thursday s from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Both programs will incorporate 15 minutes of tumbling time each day. At the state meet both boys earned their highest scores on floor with Carson placing fifth and Jake placing first in their respective age brackets. Jake was in a tight race for first place overall until an upsetting fall on the rings caused him to drop to third. He quickly regained his composure and earned a combined score of 52.7 which qualified him to compete in the regional competition held in Albuquerque, New Mexico on April 13. Congratulations! Carson and Jake competed in six events including floor, high bar, pommel horse, rings, vault, and parallel bars. They are scored for each individual event and then are ranked according to their total score. The athletes have Jake Lewis on the rings.
