Show Avoid backaches, heart attacks Learn to shovel snow safely, ergonomically by Capt. Jeffery McGuire 75th Medical Group The snow is here! This winter a higher level of snowfall than we have had in the past two years has been predicted. According to the weathermen at Hill, we should have closer to normal snowfall, which is 60 inches here in the valley. This will be enough to cause health concerns if shoveling snow is in the forecast for you. Every year we hear of people dying while shoveling snow. This is due not only to possible underlying cardiac disease, but also to snow shoveling causing significant stress on the heart. A person can reach their maximum heart rate and in as quickly as two minutes this will only make a small dent in the amount of snow shoveling heshe may do. To avoid over stressing your heart, especially if you do not consider yourself to be in good condition, size up the job and plan for regular rest breaks. Do not push yourself into exhaustion before resting. A good test to measure if youre overdoing it is the talking test. Simply try talking in a normal voice. If you cant speak normally without gasping for breath, then you are pushing yourself too hard and its time to take a break. 4 Low back pain is another major area of concern. Shoveling snow can be very stressful on the spine and its musculature, especially if rrr n f r i A4 b r, -- t j: n have to lift and throw snow, do not bend and twist at the waist Instead,' bend at your knees, tighten stom-- v ach muscles, and keep the load close to you. Pivot on your feet and try to throw the snow straight ahead. This will go a long way toward taking the strain off of your back. If you can afford it, a snowblower is also a good purchase since it does the major portion of the work. The physical Therapy Clinic offers hour-lonback education classes that are open to anyone on base. This class consists of lecture, video and exercise instruction.
