From the reign of Boleslaa the Great fo the crime of 1772 (the partition of Foland), the chivalry of Poland repelled ninety-on- e Tartar Invasions, any one of which, If successful, would have at least Jeopardized the existence of European civilization, says the American Catholic Review. For many centuries that chivalry was the sole barrier of Europe against the triumph of Muscovite ambition, and the reason of the Polish success Is to he found, not In the unquestionable valor of the Polish heart, not In any solidity of the government which directed that valor, but in the religious tie which bound the Poles together the only tlo which this restive people have ever regarded as unbreakable. This is tho most salient fact In all Polish history. The political constitution of Poland was the most faulty In Christendom, probably in the world; and precisely because of that constitution her history is that of an almost continual civil war a condition of things which In any other land would have rendered foreign invasion synonymous with national ruin. But, so long as the religious tie remained, Poland could have 100,-00- 0 masters In tho persons of her fractious nobles; the entire people could be serfs; and there would be but one law and one country for every Polander. For many centuries the battle hymn of this warlike race was a beautiful canticle In honor of our lady, which had been composed by the martyr St. Adalbert, the first apostle of Northern Poland; and to mention only one of the many customs which show how the Catholic spirit was Identified with Polish patriotism, what a lesson the Polish boy received when, while assisting at mass, he noticed that at the reading of the gospel every noble drew his sword half-wa- y out of the scabbard, In sign of his sworn devotion to the faith, even unto death. Chicago Tribune: If there Is anything which stirs np the old soldiers it is contemplation of the secret list of elite pensioners, which is the title generally given to those fortunate persons who draw from a grateful country the sum of $50 or upwards. Commissioner Evans, report, just issued, shows that there were 910,014 pensioners on the rolls June 30, 1S97. The appropriation for the fiscal year was $140,000,000, but the payments exceeded this by nearly $2,000,000. The report shows that the average anuual value of each pension was only $123, which means that the immense appropriation, if evenly divided, would have given each pensioner between $11 and $12 per mouth. The common soldiers have grumbled against the favorites, who, they say, generally do not need the money. It always has been charged that in the list of pensions paying $50 per month and over would be found the greatest frauds. These lists have always been kept secret, and applications for their publication Lave invariably been refused. The facts were open to all, but the names were Considered as confidential in the pension department. The report shows that there are on the rolls 3,000 pensioners who draw $50 per month or over. They drew on the annual pension appropriation to the extent of $3.021,04.8. There are 977 at $50 monthly, 9 at $00, 2,581 at $72, 12 at $75. 57 at $100. Then there are four widows of generals who each draw $2,000 a year, and two with an annual pension of $5,000. Mrs. Pinkham Say When Ws Ylolat Nature' Law Our Punishment Is Pain If We Continue to Neglect th Warning We Die. at least seventy years in which to fulfill our mission in life, and it is generally our own fault if we die prematurely. Nervous exhaustion invites disease. This statement is the positive truth. When everything becomes a burden and you cannot walk a few blocks without excessive fatigue, and you break out into perspirations easily, and your face flushes, and you grow excited and shaky at the least provocation, and you cannot bear to be crossed in anything, you are in danger; your nerves have given out; you need building up at once To build up womans nervous system and restore woman's health, we know of no better or more inspiring medicine than Lydia E. Pinkhams Vegetable Compound. Your ailment taken in time can be thrown off, if neglected it will run on into great suffering and pain. Here is an illustration. Mbs. Lucy Goodwin, Holly, W. Va., says: I suffered with nervous prostration, faintness, feeling and palpitation of the heart. I could not stand but a few moments at a time without sensation. having that terrible bearing-dowWhen I commenced taking Lydia E. Pinkhams Vegetable Compound I only weighed 108 pounds, and could not sit up half a day; before, however, 1 had used a whole bottle, I was able to be about. I took in all about three bottles of the Compound, and am entirely cured; now I weigh 131 pounds and feel like a new woman, stronger and better than ever in my life. So it transpires that because of the virtues of Mrs. Pinkhams wonderful Compound, even a very sick woman can be cured and live to a green old age.
