Show 4 THE GREEN SHEET 4, 1988 Thursday, February SPORTS Spartans Rip Cubs, Nip JHS MURRAY. A big first quarter, when they scored 22 points against only 11 for South, got Murrays Spartans off on the right foot here Tuesday night and they went on to win 9 with all of the players on both teams 58-3- seeing some action. 'Hie win followed the big victory Friday night at Jordan and gave Coach Craig Hammers team a 3 record in Region Six play, second only to Judges 1 mark. The Spartans will entertain Granite at home on Friday and will then go to West next Tuesday. Both games are set for 7:30 p.m. South started the game with a full court press which Murray had no trouble breaking with Doug Chapman and Todd Tuttle picking up some easy baskets. The South team, which has only nine players, just could not in either size or compete quickness with the Murray team, which outrebounded them by the huge margin of 45 to 1 8. The game was played quite cleanly with Murray hitting on nine of fourteen free throws while South cashed in on three of ten. Todd Tuttle led Murray with 16, Doug Chapman had 15, and David Madsen ten for the only players in double figures although both Murray and South had eight players each who scored. 5-- 7-- Murray 55 Jordan 53 21-1- lead 7 at the end of one but Coach Craig BENT OVER BACKWARDS . . . He felt that Spence Tueller played one of his better games and had a real good defensive effort. 5x13 on high Murray three-poitries while Jordan was hitting only two of eleven. Murray shot 45 percent for the game against the 43 percent of Jordan. Chapman led his team with 16 points and had 11 rebounds. Coach Hammer was pleased with the win and felt that Youngs shooting in the first half forced Jordan to come out in the second half and opened it up for Chapman, who scored most of his 16 in the second half. Coagh Hammer also explained that Murray had played a full court press the entire game and that they had sagged on Aaron 53-5- 1 seven-minut- nt SLCC Splits With Ricks, NIC half, the Bruins st couldnt keep pace with the Vikings Saturday. With the score at 75-7- 1 and with less than two minutes remaining, it was obvious that Skyline would have to foul to tiy to get the ball back. It was equally obvious that Cottonwood would want the ball in Shane Henschens hands if possible. Both teams did as expected and Henschen sank eight of nine free throws to insure Cottonwoods win 85-8- 0 on Tuesday. The win was the second big one of the week for the Colts as they defeated Taylosville on Friday and it gave the Colts a 14-record for the year and a spotless standing in Region play. They will not play Friday but will entertain Olympus at 6 p.m. Monday and will travel to Granger for a 6 p.m. game on 74-6- 8 2 7-- 0 Wednesday. Henschen was actually the right man in the right place for Cottonwood on several occasions in this game as he fired in two long bombs with 40 seconds to play in the first quarter to bring his team back from a 3 deficit to a 23-1- 9 margin. He also hit another three-pointwith 1:50 left in the half to give his team a 37-3- 5 lead on their way to a half ' ' time lead of ., The scrappy Skyline team took over the lead at the end of three 58-5- 6 thanks to the impressive shooting of Ryan Hunt and Bryce Doman. But Cottonwood took the lead early in the fourth on two free throws by Brad Sorensen, a basket and free throw by Jerry Martineau, a hoop by Travis Warner and another bucket by Sorensen plus the first two of Henschens ten free throw points of the quarter. Skyline could never get even and they were especially hurt when their big center, Brian Hughes, fouled out with five minutes to go. Both teams had exceptional nights at the bonus stripe with Cottonwod going 26x30 shots while Syline was 23x28. The Eagles scored seven "threefers" with Ryan Hunt hitting six while Henschen hit four and Warner one for the Colts. Henschen led in scoring with had 20, 29, while Sorensen Martineau 14, and Warner 16. 39-38- Cottonwood 74, Warriors 68 21-1- Tayldrsville scored more points (36) in the last quarter than it tering a 6748 beating.
