Show t THE BUILDING TRADES COUNCIL A moderate and conservatively worded statement was printed In yesterday yes-terday mornings Tribune from the Building Trades Council of this city For the most part It calls for no crIll clam or comment But two points standout stand-out prominently in It The first Is the claim that notice was given to the contractors In ample time that after May 1st of this year the rule against working with nonunion men would be strjotly enforced Second that there Is plenty of union men here to do all the work required If the first statement Js true then the contractors should be estopped from urging their claim that they dont know what the trouble Is about for If they received that notice and employed nonunion men after the date named they could not fall to know that such act woujd make discontent and cause trouble But the contractors claim they had to I employ nonunion men because there was not enough union men to do the work This brings us to the second point of contention as stated and it raises a direct Issue of fact If the contractors are right In con tending that there Is an Insufficient supply of union men for all the work required they ought to have the right Of employing such as Is to be had and this Is the subhtiyicc of the agreement between contractors and workmen In the recent settlement of the longstanding longstand-ing strike in the building trades In New York It la not easy to see therefore why there should bj any prolonged or troublesome strike here If the unions can supply all the labor needed why not let them do 01 If they cant they ought not to retard operations by insisting In-sisting on a point where tho very conditions con-ditions of the problem show that they have failed |
