Show TEE TLNTIC HOMICIDE The Murderer in the Provo Jail The Body of Hatchings HereOn Here-On Thursday morning the HER ARD published a special dispatch from Silver City Tintic announcing announc-ing that Thomas Williams shaft boss at the Mammoth mine had shota man named J E Hutchings in the bowels and that Hutchings could not survive The shooting took place at 6 oclock on Wednesday Wednes-day evening and at 130 on Thursday Thurs-day Hutchings was dead The particulars as near as they can be learned give the homocide the character of being one of the most brutal and unprovoked of which a person could be capable J E Hutchings went to work on the 17th inst and Williams put him in the mine as partner of a Cornishman The supposition is that the man was not a competent miner or was not agreeaole to the Coinishman for he had worked but two and a half days when he was discharged and the supposition is that the Cornishman had complained to Williams which caused Hutch ings discharge Some days ago Williams said he had heard that Hutchings threatened to to kill him and said he Williams could fix the sn of a bh the first time he saw him On Wednesday evening Williams set out saying he would kill Hutchincs on sight He left his lodgings armed with two bulldcg pistols and went to the house where Hutchings boarded Not finding him there he started for Silver City In the meantime a friend of Hutchings had gone to to Silver City to warn Hutchings but they took different trails and missed each other Williams had not gone far before he saw Hutehings coming up the trail and he started for him When they met Williams accused Hutchingsof threatening his life Hutchings denied de-nied the charge and demanded the name of the party that had told Williams the story This the latter declined to give but said ho would take the mans word before he would Hutchmgs Hutchings said he did not care who the man was he was a liar Williams then said Hutchings had got to take back the threats and get down on his knees or die Hutclnngs said he had nothing to take back and would not get down on his knees Williams then pulled out a pistol and pointing it at Hutchings said he would kill him Hutchings egged for his life got down on his knees and declared that he would take back anything and everything but Williams fired the pistol and the ball took effect as stated andiwith the result as already given This she s-he statement of parties at the examination ex-amination of Williams who claimed they overheard the conversation conver-sation It is said Williams even made threats to kill these witnesses wit-nesses a man and a woman witt whom Hutchings boardedin the room while the examination was in I progress What Williams version is remains to be seen On Friday evening the remains of Hutchings and the prisoner were brought from Tintic to Lehi the body being brought to this city and Williams being taken to the Provo jail Hutchings was about 31 years old hc s lived in Salt Lake for about 26 years and had a wife and children chil-dren The funeral services will take place from the house of his mother inlaw on Sunday the 25th at 2 p m Friends are invited to attend The remains were brought to this city by Mr J Riley a miner at the Mammoth wnile Williams was taken to Provo by Deputy Sheriff Durfey |
