Kills by Daniel enabled server Dahl to put Pleasant Grove ahead 24- - 23. Alta evened the game at 24, but a Daniel kill broke the tie and sent the Vikings on their way to winning the game 26-2- 4. Viking Coach Jamie Schapper said, "We had a hard time against Alta tonight. They're real great fighters at the net. They battled us for every single point." by Dean Von Memmott The Pleasant Grove Vikings survived a tight, four-gam-e match that they played at home against the Alta Hawks in Region Four volleyball action September 28. Pleasant Grove won the match by scores of 25-1- 3, 25-1- 9, The first game opened on a heart-stoppi- note. Kay la Bowman and Delayne Daniel guided the Vikings out an early 3-- 1 lead. However, under the leadership of Kaitlyn Vanhoff and Sydney Marchant, the Hawks flapped back to pull ahead 8-- 5. Pleasant Grove capitalized on some Hawk hitting errors to retake firm control of the game. The Vikings pulled ahead 10-- 9. Alta stayed really close to Pleasant Grove until Kim Dahl started registering kills that enabled the Vikings to pull away. Sisters Audrey and Kat Biggs produced hits that gave Pleasant Grove the momentum it needed to win Game 1 25-1- 3. With Dahl dominating Viking hitting in Game 2, the Vikings had no trouble with rowing out in front 7-- 2. Vanhoff and Challie Mitchell attempted to initiate Alta comebacks late in the game, but with a Daniel kill having put the Viking Jead at 14-- 4, the Hawks soon lost whatever chance they had for turning their fortunes around. A Daniel kill gave Pleasant Grove a 25-1- 9 win. By Game 3, Alta's morale should have been smashed to pieces. However, the Hawks showed no signs of calling it quits. Vanhoff and Nicole Koehler's hitting quickly created a 6-- 0 lead for the Hawks. At that point, Pleasant Grove woke up to the fact that Alta was still far from being finished. However, the Vikings had trouble putting together an effective offense. Marchant, Vanhoff and Mitchell pretty much neutralized Dahl, Daniel and the Biggs sisters at the net. When the scoreboard read 13-- 3, Alta, a fourth game became inevitable. The Vikings battled back within 22-1- 7, but the Hawks held them in check. The fourth game became a seesaw fight. For a little while, all the Vikings could do was tie the game. After a Scout Heizer tip had improved a Hawk lead at 15-1- 2, the Vikings called a time-out to make adjustments. Kills by Daniel and Audrey Biggs guided Pleasant Grove within 17-1- 6, but the Hawks continued staying out in front. When the Hawk lead had grown to 21-1- 7, a fifth game seemed likely. An Alta violation gave the Vikings fresh momentum. A Pleasant ' " "i Y - V 'v" j vA Le 'o Fotu celebrates a Lady Viking game winning point. The Vikings seemed to have a problem getting excited about the game. The Captains tried to get the players pumped, but there was no emotion or drive displayed. Maybe, if there is a game to ignore or not care about, maybe this was that game. We are still ranked in second place in Region 4 along with Alta High with a 2-- 1 record in region games, Jordan is. in third, Brighton and AF in fourth and Hillcrest on the bottom. Our last three games will not be easy. Brighton High is coming to Pleasant Grove for Homecoming this week. According to statistics, they are beatable. We play Lone Peak here on the 13th, they are ranked 1 in Region 4 and will probably show a 5-- 0 region record when they come to play. Alta is our last regular season game on October 22 and they are always a tough team to play. The games from here on will not be anything to ignore. This part of the season is where Pleasant Grove will have the opportunity to strap it up and play the way we all know they can or shrink back and join the ranks of teams no one remembers. Either way, we all need to get out and enjoy an evening supporting and helping to boost the Vikings drive to perfection. (And buy a hot dog or two!) Besides, you never know who you might see there and do some reminiscing of your own! by Kent Allen The drive both to and from the Viking's game at Jordan High School this last week was very enjoyable due to the company that shared the ride. The football team's stats recorder, Dell Young, traveled with me sharing stories and updating each other about family activities made the commute almost bearable. With all the construction and traffic jams, travel time to anywhere needs to be a main consideration no matter your destination. Anyway, we arrived in time for the game and returned home safely. Not so with the football team. In fact, I'm still not sure they even showed up. Just like tne American Fork and West Jordan games, the Vikings spotted the "Diggers" 10 points before PG started playing. I'm not sure I like that strategy. The Vikings played catch up football all night. The surprise is that they were looking like they were on their way to scoring the winning touchdown when an errant handoff went askew and Jordan recovered. They ran out the final 48 eight seconds and won the game , final score 27-- 2 1 . It's a respectable score, but from where I can see the game, the Beetdiggers are not that good. In fact, they are very beatable. This year they are not a quality team. Jordan ran the ball 37 times for 172 yards and passed 17 out of 32 times for 221 yards for a total yardage of 393 yards. The Vikings ran 38 times for 126 yards and passed 10 of 17 for 130 yards for a total of 256 ' i v .... - 7V' .' .& , .,. . The Viking defensive line held tough right up until the end, unfortunately for PG, the team fell short of a victory against Jordan High.
